Setting up a Tactical Address for Your Use

To set up a Tactical Address in your copy of Winlink Express:

  • Select “Settings” then “Winlink Express Setup”
  • Notice the “Auxiliary Callsigns and Tactical Addresses” section.
  • Select “Add Entry”
  • Type in the “Tactical Address” assigned to you.
  • Type in the “Password” for that particular address.
  • Unless you will be using the address immediately, uncheck "Enabled".
  • Select “Save”
  • Select "Update ".

Enabling a Tactical Address

When you are ready to receive messages sent to the tactical address or send messages using the address as the From instead of your FCC callsign, return to the Winlink Express Setup dialog to select the tactical address, select “Edit Entry” and check “Enabled”; then select “Save” and then "Update". To receive email addressed to your tactical address, open and start a Winlink session as you usually would.  Any email addressed to your FCC call sign or your enabled logical address will be placed in your Inbox.

Disabling a Tactical Address

If you no longer want to receive emails from a tactical address, use the Winlink Express Setup dialog to select the tactical address, select “Edit Entry” and uncheck “Enabled”; then select “Save” and then “Update".  A key example is when you have been serving as a subnet controller (SNC) for a NET simplex region and the exercise is over or your shift is ending, you should disable the corresponding tactical address.  This will prevent your copy of Winlink Express from accidentally receiving messages addressed to that address and preventing the next person serving as the SNC for your region from doing so.

Replying to a Message Addressed to your Tactical Address

To reply to a message addressed to a tactical address, simply select it and select reply as you usually would.

Sending a Message from or to a Tactical Address

When creating a new message, you can use a tactical address as your From address by clicking the down arrow next to your callsign in the From field and selecting the tactical address. (This assumes you have previously enabled that tactical address.) To send a message to a tactical address, start a new message as usual and type the tactical address in the To field.  As with other addresses, you can include several addresses by separating them by semicolons.
